Article on Global Education
Kamberg, Mary-Lane. "The Evolution of Continuing Education." Women in Business 59 (2007): 22-27. ProQuest. LCCC. 23 Apr. 2007. Keyword: Online Education.

Abstract (Document Summary)
An estimated 1.2 million students in the United States seven percent of all post-secondary students - enrolled in wholly online degree programs in 2005 (the most recent statistics available), says Mindy Hershberger, a research analyst specializing in online education at Eduventures, LLC, a Boston research and consulting firm for the education industry. "Changes in the U.S. and world economies have raised the importance of lifelong learning for those in the workforce," says James Hambnght, vice president of marketing, communications and enrollment at UMUC. The prevalence of high-speed Internet access though cable or DSL (digital subscriber lines that provide digital data transmission over telephone lines) instead of dial-up has also led to online education programs' use of easy-to-access, rich media, including online video, live chat sessions with peers and professors, and live audio to create a quality learning experience for their students.

Undaunted, the student cited his First Amendment rights, whereupon the principal grabbed the banner, mashed it to the ground, and, on the spot, suspended Joe for five days for-as she and the school board claimed-promoting drug use and thereby violating the school's basic educational mission.

Anonymous. "Internationalizing the Undergraduate Curriculum." PS, Political Science & Politics Jan. 2007. Proquest.

To be of relevance, political science needs to approach global politics and the issues the global context raises through a lens the insights and techniques these papers offer can help construct. The APSA Committee on Internationalizing the Undergraduate Curriculum (Christine Ingebritsen (chair), University of Washington; Mark Cassell, Kent State University; Steven Lamy, University of Southern California; David Mason, Butler University; Pamela Martin, Carolina Coastal University; and Deborah Ward, Selon Hall University) aims to encourage political science as a discipline to think through how to teach in this new, global world. The primary audiences of concern for their Global Education Initiative are high-school students, college students, radio listeners, and newspaper readers.

Mangan, Katherine S. "University and Foundation Create Online MBA for the Deaf." The Chronicle of Higher Education 47 (2001): a39-a39. Abstract. The Chronicle of Higher Education 25 (2001): a39. Proquest.

DeSales University and a technology foundation are teaming up to develop what they believe will be the nation's first online MBA program for students who are deaf or hard of hearing. The Pennsylvania university, which changed its name in January from Allentown College of St. Francis De Sales, plans to begin operating the program this fall.

Attitudes have changed since the advent of the Web. Schools of all kinds are much more likely to understand the benefits of extending their learning experience beyond campus walls. Perhaps the most well-publicized effort in this area is the OpenCourse-Ware program first established by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). MIT now posts the course notes and study materials for over 1,500 of its courses online. Add to that an almost uncountable number of schools that have begun offering distance-learning over the Web for a fee. No question distance education has mushroomed.

Just Added:Miller, John L. "The New Education Professionals: the Emerging Specialties of Instructional Designer and Learning Manager." International Journal of Public Administration 30 (2007): 483. Proquest. Proquest. LCCC, Allentown. 23 Apr. 2007. Keyword: Online Education.

Abstract (Document Summary)
Recognizing that improvement in online education requires a better understanding of learning process, it is argued that online educators should concentrate on a level of organization higher than that of email, discussion boards and learning objects that a number of authors (e.g., Miller, Shrivastava) have called "learning management." Thus we may replace the traditional role of the instructor (content delivery) by new roles of "instructional designer" to create courses and "learning manager" to deliver them. The core competence of both these new education professions is to combine a broad understanding of educational technology with a deep knowledge of learning. [PUBLICATION ABSTRACT]

Hoping to avoid a showdown with lawmakers, the Colorado state board of education convened its own task force last week to recommend changes to online education, following a scathing state audit that criticized some programs as being poorly supervised and ineffective. Brevard Community College, a nationally recognized leader in science and technology initiatives with some 3,700 students already participating in distance learning telecourses, was a natural pilot site for the WCC, says Jacques Dubois, joint director of Distance Learning at BCC and the University of Central Florida, a four-year institution. Rio Salado College of Phoenix, an 18-year-old, two-year school with more than 9,500 students, has offered a degree-credit marketing course -- via the Internet and audioconferencing -- to Australia. One student has already taken a course from Kuwait, plans are under way for an English-based technical writing course over the `Net in Russia, and Hong Kong might be in the future, says Ryan Carstens, the school's dean of Information Technologies Services. In fact, information now readily accessed by students throughout the campus at popular touch-screen kiosks is now finding its way -- via the Internet -- to personal computers in dorm rooms, libraries and computer labs. This trend joins the hundreds of Home Page sites schools are now developing for the Internet's World-Wide Web, such as at Rio Salado College (www.rio.maricopa.edu).

DARLENE TILLEY
Color and Interior Design are my passion. This picture was found on a interior design blog "Urban Prestige". The blog site for interior design is filled with ideas, products, and advertisements for designers. Although this site has some useful links and product ideas, the overall navigating within this site is not as user friendly or as professionally set up as a larger interior design site such as HGTV.com. This site does not require membership to post nor to navigate through out the links yet it is a little confusing using the various links which should be worded more accurately.

My Space.com summary/critique

This social web site is not the easiest site to navigate. Icons are used and require the user to click twice before activating. Membership to this site is not required to view most profiles, however to view pictures and videos, membership is required. Another feature of this site is a requirement to be invited by the profile owner. The majority of users are young people who use the site for social purposes.

The first profile was of a young woman named Broken. Her URL is http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?useaction=user.viewPicture&friendID=142806267. The site was upbeat with pictures of family and friends, music and movie favorites and lastly her quotes.

The next profile was of an older man who had a few pictures of himself. His URL is http://www.myspace.com/fox_clark. This site was not interesting to view when compared to Broken’s profile site due to the lack of information about this person.

The last profile was a teenage girl who had some interesting items such as pictures of friends, places she would like to visit and a few quotes. The URL was not accessible probably due to security and the profiler’s age.

Dena analysis

Last fall, I watched October Sky Movie in my English class. This movie talks about teenagers’ life in a poor small town called Coalwood in West Virginia. Homer Hickam was the hero of October Sky movie who is a student in high school. He tries to invent a rocket with his friends’ help, but his father is not helpful and always discourages him. Homer’s mother, on the other hand, is very helpful. For example, when her husband had an accident at work, Homer took his father’s place at work to support his poor family. The father wants his son to leave school even after his health improved, but the mother wants her son to continue his education and keep his job. One time, she threatend to leave her husband if he does not support their son. By the end of the movie, he supported his son with his invention and he was proud of him. The parents should always encourage and enhance their children’s ambitions even if it is not the parents ambitions. In this story, Homer’s father is against his son’s goal because he is uneducated person and does not appreciate science. Once he saw his son making tools with his friends for his invention, he got upset and he broke the equipment because he believes his son is wasting time and he should be working instead of going to school. Homer’s mother is more understandable than his father, she was very supportive for her son’s invention and finally she convinced her husband to support their son’s invention and to finish his school. In our time, most teenagers decide their own future because the parents does not pressure their children like old generation. Parents should be supportive for their children’s education future, and do not destroy their ambitions.

Blog Paper

www.Aviationblog. com is a site where pilots can communicate their latest information and concerns from their varying perspectives on the field fo aviation. Some sites you don’t have to join to comment like the one I picked. It is navigated by category.
I went into Funny Aviation Stories, the posts on this page were of funny stories, pictures and cartoons. The pictures on the page are of a halloween airplane crash site, love clouds a cloud swirling in the shape of a heart, elephant towing a plane, a nudist flight, plane with no wings, low flying sign, plane with lions. The cartoons are dilbert on overlooking and the other one is about dangerous cabin air. The funny stories from the week of posts on the blog were of blind pilots flying (two of them)?, a joke about easy jets. Another one is about funny things that flight attendants and pilots have said, story on maintenance problems. The best two are 13 rules of the air and 33 greatest lies of aviation.

Social Networking Sites

Myspace website is user friendly all you have to do is type in the name and their webpage comes up. You don’t need to join to view any webpages, but if you wish to comment or become someone’s friend you must join. The general make up of this site is broken down into categories, like music, videos, and groups etc... You must pick the space that interests you and click on the page to view.
The typical users are mostly teens, young adults and people trying to become discovered like models and musical groups. Some use the site to promote themselves or products. While others just use it to make friends and stay in touch.
The three webpages that I picked are from the music industry. The fray is a rock group, they post their up coming shows, general information about the members and you can listen to some of their music. Incubus is the second site I went too. Their also rock and basically their site is the same as the frays. The third site is from Drowning Pool their also a rock group but not as famous. Their page is a little different in the fact that you have to click on the Icons to get there information.

Social Network Summary and Critique

Myspace seems to be a gigantic social and entertainment search engine. It covers music, video, film, blogs, events and much more. After a little practice, I was able to navigate through the site quite easily and did a Myspace Google search in order to find the corresponding topics I was interested in. Although, to attain full access to the sites, I had to login as a member. I spent the majority of my time looking through the people section of the site. I typed in the names of some random people as well as some that I knew and thought might have a site. After spending an hour or two on Myspace, I soon realized that the majority of the profiles were young people looking for friends or relationships. I also discovered that many people I knew lied about themselves on a regular basis.

First I looked up my friend Keith, he has been divorced for about six years. He had a younger picture of himself on his in-laws deck, a place he hasn’t been for many years. He seemed to have forgotten about his two children and had few pictures of some sexy women on his page, that I am sure he has never met. He will have a lot of explaining to do if someone decides to check him out.

Next I thought it would be fun to check my name out. I found a 34 year old Brian Moser from Florida, whom had 34 friends listed. They were mostly women and into the whole deep dark gothic seen. He only had a few friends that kept in contact with him, but they were very interesting characters.

Lastly, I found another Brian Moser whom lived in Florida as well, but was 37 years old. This guy was quite different. He had no friends and claimed to be a serial killer. His blog described how he killed and cut up hookers. He also talked of finding his long lost brother Dexter Morgan. I can’t figure out why no one wanted to contact him. He sort of looks like the other Brian Moser, so I’m guessing this is a hoax. Although you can never tell, those Brian Mosers can be a pretty unpredictable bunch.

My Take On Social Networking Sites

My Space - A Typical Site

The My Space site is made up of people, businesses, and advertising. The navigation is point and click mouse navigation, or text search navigation. Visitors do not have to join to visit most pages, but some are locked and can only be viewed if invited by that pages author. If a viewer wants to see the postings or the author’s pictures or videos, they must join My Space to do so.

The average user of MySpace Pages is about the same as the average citizen of the planet Earth. I saw pages from all around the world, detailing the interests and longings of those average people. There were a lot of sex related pages both commercial and personal. I would expect this in any community, since sex is an integral part of who we are as a species. There were a lot of commercial pages as well; the site is a global community.

I found three pages that I feel are typical. The first one is by Bon Jovi. This page demonstrates the commercial value of sites like My Space, not only for established musicians, but also for undiscovered artists to have a forum to present themselves to the world. The next one is by a young college man in Oklahoma. This I feel is a typical example of the average person using the site to provide a broader social arena for them to enjoy. He has 38 friends and a very funny CGI cartoon set to MC Hammer’s “Can’t touch this”. The last one is by a quirky, 22 year old woman from Uzbekistan. Her page is fun and funky and shows a good, if bizarre sense of humor. Her page shows that people around the world are not so very different from those in America. This page gave me a feeling of membership in the human race.

Blogger.com - Electric Guitar Review

The weblog Electric Guitar Review is just that, a review of all makes and models of guitars. The information is extensive and I would recommend it for anyone interested in buying a guitar, from the professional musician to the guy looking to buy his first guitar. The site is well formatted and uses point and click, as well as text navigation. All of the postings for the last week are guitar related. From recommendations or critiques of specific brands, to tips and tricks on playing and learning methods. If you are into guitar, this site is for you!

Blog Summary and Critique

I visited The Huffington Post website after conducting a Blogger.com search for Bill O’Reilly. It took me to the Steven Young section of the Huffington Blog page. In addition to the Blog page, the site had a link to a Home, News, Eat the Press, and Fearless Voices page. The site can be navigated by clicking on a link of interest or by looking up a topic in the search box feature. I spent the majority of my time on the Blog page reading the opinions of Steven Young. In order to respond to his blog, I had to register my name and email address with the Huffington Post Website. I also discovered a countless number of bloggers which are linked to this website. I will stick to the postings of Steven Young for my summary/critique.
Steve Young has had a variety of articles posted on his blog page over the past week. The topics covered Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, Fox News, Scooter Libby, the Iraq War, Bill O’Reilly and Oprah Winfrey. I focused on his story about Oprah inviting O’Reilly on to her show to discuss sexual predators and how we can protect our children from them. Young wrote that Oprah was being played by one of the most manipulative predators, Bill O’Reilly. He said that O’Reilly was just using her show to cover up negative comments he had previously made about the Kidnapping victim, Shawn Hornbeck. He thinks that Oprah gave him a pass on his past behavior and needs to confront him on these issues. Although Mr. Young’s opinions may have some truth to them, I think he missed the greater point of the liberal minded Oprah and the conservative O’Reilly, coming together to fight against child sexual predators.
Myspace this site is very user friendly because all the user has to do is type a name and the person’s webpage pops up, also, making it very navigable to everyone. If a person wants to view a webpage that person has to join my space to view it. Most of the people on myspace are on because they want other people to ask them to be their friend. Also, people that are not notice in the music industry or in business at all can use a place like myspace to give the world their product or their music.

Cubanmami is my friend on my space. Her name is keila. Her page represents what she is she is very kind, playful, and very girlish. She states in her page her patriotism for Cuba by using a Cuban flag as her cursor. Also, she is very friendly to everyone on myspace. Personally I like her page and it is one of the cleanest pages on my space.

The second profile I chose to critique and summarize is my other friend bboy halo. His page basically, is just his friends leaving comments. The only critique that I have against this page is that he does not have any images or representation of his name, Bboy. Bboy stands for breakdancer. I would have put pictures of people breakdancing so I can be identified as one.

The final page that I chose to comment on is my friend sweet simplicity. Her name is Jessica. She is an all time friend from a long time ago. Her page is very girl centered and very God centered too. She is about to get married next year so in her page she is showing it by putting a picture of a wedding band. This also is one of the cleanest pages on the web and she is also very humble and I like that about her.

This is how you would cut and paste your summary/critique of a social networking site as well as a blog.
